Kristin D. DeHaven, M.D.
PERSONAL INTERESTS
Dr. DeHaven has a strong faith that has guided her through good and bad times. She feels strongly that her mission is to help her patients be the healthiest they can be.
“My job is to empower women with knowledge. I try to spend a lot of time educating women about the How’s and Why’s of their conditions. Through education, we can try to reduce risky behaviors, critically assess our personal role in taking control of our health, and make positive steps towards a long, healthy life.”
Dr. DeHaven and her husband enjoy obstacle course racing, and she is a CrossFit enthusiast. Her oldest son is a Marine stationed at Twentynine Palms, California. Her youngest son keeps her busy with travel sports.
BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Kristin DeHaven knew that she wanted to be a physician from an early age. She clearly recalls the first time she visited the hospital where her father worked as an inpatient pharmacist.
“The hospital was small, and we entered through the Emergency Department. I saw the busy nurses and doctors caring for their patients, and they seemed so serious. Even though I was young, I recognized the importance of their work, and I realized that I wanted to help others through medicine.”
Since that time Dr. DeHaven has dedicated her life to medicine. She completed her Bachelor of Science at Wake Forest University and directly entered medical school at West Virginia University. She completed her residency training at the University of Louisville, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
Currently she works for the women of her community to improve their health.
Dr. DeHaven has also traveled abroad for medical missions to Nicaragua, and has travelled to Haiti five times to perform gynecologic surgery in that challenging environment. “I feel truly blessed to be able to partner with the Community Coalition for Haiti. They provide a wonderful facility for the underserved women of Haiti. Because these women haven’t had any access to medical care, they have come of the most significant gynecologic problems I have ever seen. Performing these difficult surgeries has enhanced my surgical skills, which is a benefit for my patients at home.”
Currently, she is secretary for Bethania Kids, which is a ministry in India. This organization focuses on empowering women and lifting up orphaned children and people with disabilities. She plans to revisit several of the residential homes and women’s empowerment programs in the fall of 2019.
